Design Your Wardrobe: Week 2

If you don’t know what I mean when I say Design Your Wardrobe: Week 2 then you can check out my blog post about Week 1 for an explanation of this series by Seamwork Mag. It took me 3 weeks to get started on Week 2 so I should be calling this Month two!

Design Your Wardrobe: Week 2 – Defining a Colour Palette

If week one was all about inspiration, Design Your Wardrobe: Week 2 is all about colours and textiles! According to the series, choosing your colours and fabrics is the next step in the process of designing a collection, even before you think about patterns. My collection goal is to to have an elegant and comfortable collection to wear in Scotland that I can wear while relaxing in my family’s homes in Scotland with a couple of dressier pieces to wear at wedding and Christmas parties. So I am on the hunt for comfortable but elegant looking fabrics.

Shopping for Swatches:

First of all, we have been instructed to ‘Shop our Stash’. Since I’m still so new to sewing I really don’t have much of a stash, mostly I just have scraps leftover from projects that I’ve already made. I’m hoarding them in a bag under my dining room table to make pillows for my boring little couch. I do have a gorgeous burgundy silk noil that I’ve been dreaming of making matching separates with. Sadly, I don’t know if my skills have quite gotten there yet so perhaps I should use this for my collection instead.

Keeping my mood board (and a glass of wine…just kidding it’s sober September) close I continued on my journey to Design my Wardrobe. I did some digging through the Seamwork series One Pattern, 3 Fabrics to learn more about different fabrics to help me decide what I want to sew with. I’m definitely lusting after some french terry. Next, I went to look at porn…ie the Blackbird Fabrics website.

Fabrics that I love:

  • French Terry (just ordered some from Blackbird Fabrics!)
  • Cupro Linen and Tencel Slub (drool)
  • Silk Noil
  • Denim
  • Sweater Knits

I’m struggling to find sweater knits online that I love so if you have any suggestions please send them my way. I’m looking for big thick sweater knits in cream, white, black and grey.

Design Your Wardrobe Week 2 Thoughts:

It took me a long time to get back to the Design Your Wardrobe Series. Now that the rain has started to fall, I feel motivated to have a real plan ahead of me in terms of what I am sewing. So two weeks finished, I have a collection theme, plan, inspiration and palette! Looking to the next dispatch!
